About me -- Barbara Lyon
I have been teaching Kripalu-style yoga for 11 years at Cambridge Health Associates and elsewhere, special classes for organizations (usually yoga for relaxation) and a variety of ongoing private lessons.
The wonderful Danielle Levi Alvares was my Kripalu-style teacher for 10 years, starting in 1986. It was she who encouraged me to become a yoga teacher -- I just wanted the pleasure of always being a student. But she persevered, trained me to teach at her studio, and then hired me.
And I'm so glad she did! Teaching yoga is one of the most rewarding, renewing experiences in my life. It feels ever-fresh to me -- topics and approaches for explorations of the body are limitless and fascinating. One week this year we did a 12-minute segment on "yoga for the eyes." In another we did a class on "yoga to help prevent breast cancer." In mid-April we do a "spring cleaning" that focuses on twists and includes a lymph system massage to help bolster our immune system. In allergy season we do yoga to help combat overreactions to allergens; at other times yoga to help us sleep, battle depression, energize or relax us.
But back to Danielle: she retired from teaching yoga in about 1997 and now teaches a course in meditation called "the Art of Happiness." If you have any interest in learning meditation, I encourage you to seek out this course (sometimes taught at Cambridge Center for Adult Education, Cambridge Health Associates, and elsewhere). Linda Carmichael, Alexander Technique
Linda Carmichael, a talented Alexander Technique Teacher, comes to our yoga classes once a semester and uses her extraordinary hands to teach us the Alexander Technique as we do the yoga. Through her gentle touch, you can feel your muscles and bones settle into alignment; chronically tense areas soften; energy flows again; you feel the deep sense of relief as your body releases -- an amazing sensation!
There is no extra charge for the classes when Linda joins us. Check back to this website for Linda's dates with our classes. Her phone is 617 591-9655; her office is at 175 Elm St. in Somerville, just outside of Davis Square.
