About the Classes
What students are saying:

I've been taking Barbara's class for 7 years or so, and it's not an exaggeration to say that it changed my life. She's such a patient, careful teacher: my body makes sense to me now in a way that it didn't before. If you want a small, gentle yoga class with a lot of personal attention, I can't recommend this class highly enough! —SM

Class today was great!  I am amazed
at how you continue to come up with these wonderful classes week after week.  Thank
you, Barbara. —Kathy

I loved every minute of the Bristol, NH retreat [Sept 2011 led by Barbara & Alexander Technique teacher Linda Carmichael]. It was wonderful to spend the weekend with such strong and interesting women.

What Barbara shared about her fears and how she turned them around to something very positive, had a big effect on me. For many of us, the road ahead may be quite challenging to say the least. We cannot rely on the social safety nets we used to have. So thinking creatively and out of the box like Barbara was describing, relying on our own inner strength and character, taking care of our health in an intelligent way by doing the things that keep us supple and strong, are increasingly more vital.  Thank you so much for all of this.  —LI

I teach in the Kripalu style with an experimental mix of other yoga styles and techniques. I have been teaching yoga for 16 years and studying it for 26, and many of the things I've learned over the years make their way into my class, including, at times, Gamma Technique, lymphatic system massage, partner poses, restoratives, Iyengar style yoga, breathing techniques, foot massage with balls, even belly dancing (as a warm up).  In the summers we do a "chakra crawl" - each week we open and balance a different chakra (energy center), and once in awhile during the rest of the year we'll do a class focusing on the chakras as well.

This is not power yoga — it is gentle yoga that builds in rigor across the semester as we become more flexible and stronger, with a better sense of balance.

Each yoga class at the studio in Cambridge has a different theme. Some classes focus on opening a particular body part like shoulders or lower back or hips; others focus on a theme like yoga for allergies or yoga for insomnia. At the changing of the seasons we do yoga and breathing exercises to beef up our immune systems. I like to keep the classes varied and fun. And I do take requests :) Plus once a semester, Linda Carmichael*, a highly-experienced Alexander Technique teacher, comes to our classes to do her gentle, hands-on aligning as we do the yoga.  Heavenly!

All classes start with a relaxing restorative pose — a few minutes to lie down, change gears, get centered. Then plenty of warm-ups and the yoga itself; all classes end with a delicious lying-down, inch-by-inch relaxation. Ahhhh.

About Linda Carmichael and Alexander Technique
*Linda Carmichael has been teaching Alexander Technique for over twenty years. Once a semester, Linda comes to our yoga classes and uses her extraordinary hands to teach us the Alexander Technique as we do the yoga. Through her gentle touch, you can feel your muscles and bones settle into alignment; chronically tense areas soften; energy flows again; you feel the deep sense of relief as your body releases -- an amazing sensation!

There is no extra charge for the classes when Linda joins us. Sign up for the email newsletter to find out when Linda will visit our classes. Feel free to contact Linda directly for more information at 339-368-1601.
